Kee Safety Supports IOGP Life-Saving Rules

IOGP, the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers, launched a simplified set of Life-Saving Rules to provide workers in the industry with the actions they can take to protect themselves and their colleagues from fatalities as part of the revision of Report 459. With these rules, IOGP aims to improve the level of industry-wide adoption across the global oil and gas industry.

What role plays Kee Safety in that rules?

Kee Safety supports these rules by providing a full set of solutions for working at height and separating people from hazards. Workers at height are always at a risk, independently of the site, if it is an oil rig out on the sea or a gas production facility.

There are solutions where the worker is not involved in the process of staying safe at all like having a safety railing on a platform. But sometimes it is not possible to install guardrails, there you have to rely on individual safety solutions like a lifeline system.

In these cases, the worker is called in his own interest to protect himself by using Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) properly. And now the personal approach comes into place.

IOGP Life-Saving Rules - "Working at height" is a crucial part

IOGP launched the Life-Saving Rules with the goal to have a tool in place that helps responsible managers to make their workers aware of how to save their lives.

They say especially for “Working at height”:

“Working at height outside a protected area (such as an elevated work area not enclosed by handrails) requires the use of approved fall protection equipment secured to an approved anchor point. Other considerations for working at height include ladders, work over water, rope access, floor openings, access hatches, and inspection pits. Floor openings should be protected with physical barriers to prevent falls.

Preventing objects from falling from height and using physical barriers below the working area keeps you and people working below you safe.

IOGP recommends that companies define working at height as work at or above 1.8m/6ft unless local legislation requires a lower height.

Scaffolds should be properly constructed, inspected, and certified.”
